Overview: If your GPS does not include the inReach communication feature, the inReach Mini is a great solution.  Riding Baja means being prepared while keeping the bike and backpack weight down, which is why the Mini makes perfect sense.  It's small, light, and easy to pack.  The Mini encompasses it all, from messaging to tracking to SOS emergency features. It can be used on its own or paired with a compatible device like a cell phone. The Earthmate® app comes with all inReach capable units (free download) and easily pairs with the inReach Mini via Bluetooth to smartphones for access to unlimited maps, aerial imagery, and U.S. NOAA charts as well as allowing users to access their compatible device’s contact list (mobile phone, Ipad, smartwatch, etc) for quick access and without manual entry.  

IMPORTANT: Because the inReach Mini is so small, it relies heavily on your cell phone.  It can operate all on its own, but it is S L O W going without connecting it to your cell with bluetooth (even in the most remote areas).  A cell phone allows access to the cell phone key pad to type the messages.  SO, with the inReach Mini, make sure our cell phone is fully charged each day and you have practiced with it before your trip.  Once this is set up and understood, using the mini is quick & easy.

How it Works:  Activate your selected plan.  Set up the inReach.  Spend some time getting to know the unit:  Understand the pages, set up tracking & send the link to loved ones to watch you on the trail, and connect it via bluetooth to your cell phone and use the phone key pad to send a test message to a friend/family, to ensure it's functioning correctly.  Write yourself a cheat sheet with the steps and carry it with you until you know it well.  Don't overdo your 'test messages' as you may have a limited number of messaging on your plan, so save it for Baja.  

Set up your Data Plan (required for communication): An active satellite subscription is required.  A variety of airtime plans range from "flexible" month-to-month options to annual contract packages.  But what if you're riding just a long weekend?  Suspend your plan and use the rest on the next adventure!
